The revelation this month in GQ magazine that Donald Rumsfeld as Defense Secretary embellished top-secret wartime memos with quotations from the Bible prompts a question. Why did he believe he could influence President Bush by that means?

The answer may lie in an alarming story about George Bush

I have this mental picture of Bush zealously explaining this to Chirac, and Chirac sitting there, nodding along vacantly with a half-befuddled, half-frightened look on his face, while sending a text under the table saying “Francois, run out and find a priest. What’s a Magog? Is it a WMD? Are there WMDs in the Bible?”

In the same year he spoke to Chirac, Bush had reportedly said to the Palestinian foreign minister that he was on

Scares the crap out of you?

Imagine how Chirac must have felt having this lunatic expound on this to him…

That would definitely be a “WTF…?” moment.

No crap.  What is just as scary as I find the whole thing totally believable.

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you’re a mile away and you have their shoes.

You really can’t make stuff like this up. Reality is always stranger than fiction. Especially with Bush.
