The Jane Austen classic is being re-written to include zombies.

Jane Austen’s classic novel Pride and Prejudice is being updated as a zombie horror book and film.

A parody of the English novel is due to be published in April under the name Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, with Hollywood studios already bidding to turn the new book into a blockbuster movie.

The new book has been penned by Los Angeles-based TV comedy writer Seth Grahame-Smith, who has been able to update Austen’s original tale because it is out of copyright.

Austen fans are in for a shock, with heroine Elizabeth Bennet and her four sisters becoming zombie slayers and taught how to fight like Japanese ninjas by Mr Darcy.

“It quickly became obvious that Jane (Austen) had laid down the blueprint for a zombie novel,” The Sunday Times quoted Grahame-Smith as saying.

“Why else in the original should a regiment arrive on Lizzie Bennet’s doorstep when they should have been off fighting Napoleon?

“It was to protect the family from an invasion of brain-eaters, obviously.”

Grahame-Smith said about 85 per cent of his novel is Austen’s original text.

“I hated her when I was forced to read Austen in school, but when I started re-reading I realised she was a brutal, but very funny, satirist,” he said.

“I can only aspire to be as mean-spirited as she could be.”

And then there’s the sequel:  Sense and Sensibility and Savoy Opera:  The Bennet Ninja Clan vs. the Pirates of Penzance.

Sounds like a load of sh**e to me.

Somebody who can;t write anything for themself shoehorning zombies (oh wow a pop cuture thing! Why not stick ninjas and pirates in too?) into Austen. He even admits most of it IS Austen. He’s done bugger all work, just slapped a few bits in mentioning zombies and he has a book! He’s done f*** all!

And don’t get me wrong. I don’t even LIKE Austen. I’ve read Pride and Prejudice and it bored me to tears. But by God I’ll defend it as an original piece of work against some freeloader trying to piggyback on its success by doing something a bit controversial with it and trying to sell books off the ensuing media attention.

Hey, my wife would at least be able to get me to watch a Jane Austen movie.  I still wouldn’t read the book, but currently I won’t watch the movies, either.

I’m re-writing Oliver Twist, but Fagin’s boys are all Zombies. It’s 99% Dickens but I’m calling it my work because I’m ‘creative’ and want money.

Buy my book!

Meh, I don’t see the issue.
It’s not like it’s replacing the original.

I like trashy novels sometimes, and this sounds like it’s going to be trashy as all hell, frankly.
I also like that it’s going to be mostly actual Austen (which I quite enjoy, by the way) - much more interesting than yet another ‘new’ zombie novel. If he can manage to fit in the zombie sections with the original sections, I’ll be impressed.

I don’t know if he can write well enough to pull this off, and I can’t guarantee I’ll actually enjoy it, but I’ll give it a go when it comes out. That won’t stop me from rereading the original.

Well, that is sort of the point of parody.  😉
