LONDON (AFP) - Men who are accused of never listening by women now have an excuse—women’s voices are more difficult for men to listen to than other men’s, a report said.

The Daily Mail, quoting findings published in the specialist magazine

NeuroImage, said researchers at Sheffield university in northern England discovered startling differences in the way the brain responds to male and female sounds.

Men deciphered female voices using the auditory part of the brain that processes music, while male voices engaged a simpler mechanism, it said.

The Mail quoted researcher Michael Hunter as saying, “The female voice is actually more complex than the male voice, due to differences in the size and shape of the vocal cords and larynx between men and women, and also due to women having greater natural ‘melody’ in their voices.

“This causes a more complex range of sound frequencies than in a male voice.”

The findings may help explain why people suffering hallucinations usually hear male voices, the report added, as the brain may find it much harder to conjure up a false female voice accurately than a false male voice.

Maybe.  But you know, me and a lot of men I know prefer male singers to female ones.  Personally there are very, very few female singers I like.  That doesn’t go along with the notion that I process female voices in the music part of my brain, but rather, maybe, that it’s the reverse.
And what the heck do they mean by “decipher music?”  Understanding the lyrics or enjoying the melody?  Because those are two very different things.

Older singers I’m split on.  There are probably more males simply because they were more prevalent.  For recent singers (90’s and up) it’s almost universally female.  There are very few contemporary male singers that I listen to.

Womens singing voices do sound nicer, but I think people prefer male voices either because it may sound more dominate, and by nature, all people look to dominence for a since of leadership and control, or the part of the brain that processes sound just finds it easier to process the male voice…......a nagging woman is very irritable to both male and female due to a higher pitch of voice…..a nagging guy just gets on your nerves a little less I think, so perhaps it is easier to listen to…....Just my opinions…..

I’ve found that women ennunciate a lot better then men, too.  There are few women I have trouble understanding when they talk, my sister being one of them.
