Eagle Scout actually is a pretty big honor for a young guy—it’s not an easy thing to do. Everybody I know who made Eagle Scout (which isn’t very many, now that I think about it 😉 ) is very proud of it, although they mostly try hide that pride once they grow up.
Not to disparage Eagle Scouts, but the one person I know who made it (I dropped out in Webelos because I was perfectly capable of watching TV at home without having to pay dues) didn’t actually have to do all that much. It took an couple of weeks of working on what he was going to do, mostly because he was procrastinating. The actual project itself only took an afternoon and even I, super-lazy-man, could have managed it.

But Charybdis, the project is just one of the requirements for Eagle Scout. I just checked the application form, and you have to meet all these requirements (merit badges and leadership positions and so on) before you even begin to worry about a project.
And Distinguished Eagle Scout is another thing altogether. First you have to become an Eagle Scout, then you have to go on in adult life and do worthwhile stuff for 25 years before you can be nominated as one of those.
