Wow.  If even Fox won’t air it during sweeps, you know it has to be a bad idea.  Especially since it probably would have won its timeslot by a wide margin.

As well as many book stores that either will NOT sell it, or will give ALL proceeds to charity if they do

Yeah—I heard that about the bookstores giving their profits to charity. Unfortunately, they can only give what is theirs to give.  OJ still makes money of the book sales, right?

I guess that’s ethics in the 21st Century.

Except the book was cancelled along with the television interview (see my last post above for the link).

Or you can just read this link which gives some of the same details along with O.J.‘s admission that he did it solely for “blood money.”

Of course, he still got an advance for doing it, but he will not profit any further on it.  (At this point.)

Publisher in O.J. book scandal fired

NEW YORK (AP)—O.J. Simpson’s would-be publisher, Judith Regan, was fired Friday, her sensational, scandalous tenure at Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp. ending with the tersest of announcements.

“Judith Regan’s employment with HarperCollins has been terminated effective immediately,” HarperCollins CEO Jane Friedman said in a statement. “The Regan publishing program and staff will continue as part of the HarperCollins General Books Group.”

Regan’s firing comes less than a month after Murdoch’s cancellation of Simpson’s hypothetical murder confession, “If I Did It,” a planned book and Fox television interview that was greeted with instant and near-universal disgust when announced.

An industry force since the 1980s, when she produced best-sellers by Drew Barrymore and Kathie Lee Gifford for Simon & Schuster, Regan has been labeled a “foul-mouthed tyrant” and the “enfant terrible of American publishing.” She is also widely envied—if not admired—for her gift of attracting attention to her books and to herself.

Since 1994, she has headed the ReganBooks imprint at News Corp.‘s HarperCollins, an ideal fit for Murdoch’s tabloid tastes. Regan has published a long list of racy best-sellers, including Jose Canseco’s “Juiced” and Jenna Jameson’s “How to Make Love Like a Porn Star,” and is the rare publisher of interest to gossip columnists, notably for a rumored affair with former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik.

She often clashed with her more temperate peers and is widely believed to have had tense relations with Friedman. Last year, Regan moved her offices to Los Angeles, further distancing herself from corporate officials in New York.

Regan has often complained that her more literary side has been overlooked, pointing out that she has published books by Wally Lamb, Douglas Coupland and novelist Jess Walter, whose “The Zero” was a finalist for the National Book Award in November. The Simpson project, announced the day before the awards ceremony, quickly overshadowed the nomination.

Accip, I was going to add (but you have here), that Judith Regan was fired yesterday.

I rather consider all this ‘seedy’ at best and irresponsible on the part of Ms. Regan.  But it certainly is clear how very foolish Simpson is, or else we are clearly aware now that he is intellectually and emotionally challenged.

I’m sorry, but I don’t see what the fuss is all about.  This is hardly the seediest or most irresponsible piece of journalism to hit the media in the past ten years.  I refuse to believe that the media is getting more responsible, the evidence is that we’re continuing a downward spiral.

So what’s the deal with this?  You know it would have made money, and that’s all that really matters.  What’s the real reason it was pulled?

Well, they must have decided that the damage it would do somehow to their company was more than the potential profits of its sales would make up for.  Maybe some of their business partners were threatening to cut contact with them, or something like that.

Sponsors were also pulling out.  I heard several contracted sponsors told Fox they would not allow their commercials to be shown during that show.  I would imagine they were also having a hard time selling commercial slots for the show.

Plus a lot of affiliates were pulling out and refusing to air it.

But that’s only for the television side of it.  What that has to do with scrapping the book, too, I don’t know.  I wouldn’t have bought it but I would have to guess they could at least get back the costs of the advance they paid O.J.
