While bored out of my mind at work today, I was thinking about how a friend of mine had described the shooter of the Amish children in PA. She said that “his cheese had slipped off of his cracker”. I think that is an endlessly amusing term, so I was wonder what other stuff I could come up with. I was also interested in seeing posts from others and their favorite colloquialisms for “crazy”.

Ones I came up with:
* “A fried chicken short of a church picnic” (I heard that in a song by Rev. Billy C. Wirtz).
* Off his nut.
* The lights are on but nobody’s home.
* Loco en la cabeza.
* ... not the sharpest tool/knife in the shed/drawer.
* ... as sharp as a bowling ball. (From Foghorn Leghorn).
* The old standby of being “nuttier than a fruitcake.”
* One fry short of a happy meal.
* He’s loony toony and oofty mcgoofty. (From another Warner Brother’s cartoon; I think Daffy Duck was in it.)

Anyone care to add to the list?

Here in Melbourne Australia “oofty mcgoofty” (or “a bit of mcgoofty”) is a slang term for sex.

Neat. I’d never heard that before.

I think that the term originated during the western expansion of the US (mid to late 1800s) when there was a fellow in San Francisco who wanted to be a circus performer. He wasn’t too athletic and he wasn’t a good actor. He decided to become one of the freaks to be in the sideshow. He covered himself in tar and horse hair. In the sideshow, he jumped around in a cage shouting “Oofty, mgoofty!” The legend states that the tar caused him to become ill and he had to lie on the roof of a building for several days for the tar to melt off of his body. Later, he realized that the tar had killed most, if not all, of the pain receptors in his skin. Oofty then marketed himself to others by selling folks the opportunity to punch him. He did all right until he was punched by one of the leading boxers of the day. After he took a hit from the prize fighter, he walked hunched over and hobbled off into obscurity.

When the outside temperature rises
And the meaning is oh so clear
One thousand and one yellow daffodils
Begin to dance in front of you - oh dear
Are they trying to tell you something ?
You’re missing that one final screw
You’re simply not in the pink my dear
To be honest you haven’t got a clue
I’m going slightly mad
I’m going slightly mad
It finally happened - happened
It finally happened - ooh woh
It finally happened - I’m slightly mad - oh dear !
Ha ha ha ha ha

I’m one card short of a full deck
I’m not quite the shilling
One wave short of a shipwreck
I’m not my usual top billing
I’m coming down with a fever
I’m really out to sea
This kettle is boiling over
I think I’m a banana tree
Oh dear
I’m going slightly mad
I’m going slightly mad (I’m going slightly mad)
It finally happened - happened
It finally happened - uh huh
It finally happened - I’m slightly mad - oh dear !

Uh uh ah ah
Uh uh ah ah

I’m knitting with only one needle
Unravelling fast it’s true
I’m driving only three wheels these days
But my dear, how about you ?
I’m going slightly mad
I’m going slightly mad
It finally happened
It finally happened - oh yes
It finally happened - I’m slightly mad !
Just very slightly mad !
And there you have it !

Queen strikes again….smile
