I don’t really think that’s a table leg; bugs just physically can’t get that big anymore. There’s not enough oxygen in the atmosphere for their method of breathing. However, they did get that big millions of years ago (was it the triassic? I can’t remember, so long ago..).
Hmm, I think it was the late Carboniferous when they had the really big insects, but I’m just going from memory on that. And you can still get some very large insects, such as goliath beetles. I can’t actually open the link to see the critter itself, but it being maybe half a foot long wouldn’t be too impossible.
