KXAS-TV
DALLAS - A novelty T-shirt being sold at a local mall is designed to be funny, according to its maker, but residents of the community targeted on the garment are not laughing. The shirt, which reads “Welcome To Oak Cliff,” depicts an armed stick figure holding another stick figure under his arm, while standing next to the open trunk of a car.

NBC 5 reported that a representative from the company that makes the shirt—Charro King—said the shirt is designed to be funny and controversial.

However, residents said they see nothing funny about the shirt, which aims to poke fun at the area’s high crime rate.

“Someone who thinks this is funny, or who would sell this, clearly hasn’t been south of the [Trinity] river in a while,” Oak Cliff resident Read Kerr said.

“My first reaction is, it’s true,” Oak Cliff resident Esteban Canales said. “And I didn’t think they would really make a shirt about it because I didn’t think people would ? really try to advertise what really goes down around here.”

Despite the negative take from people who live in Oak cliff, the shirt is Charro King’s best seller, NBC 5 reported.

Silly… but I’m not the kind of guy who wears “funny t-shirts.”

It doesn’t even really seem that funny.  I like the ones that say things like, “Hard Wood Lumberjack Camp - Hardest Wood Around”  That’s a bad example, but you probably get the picture.

Yeah, if it’s supposed to be funny…I don’t get it.  Texas humor…It’s just something different.

I can’t read the cursive text below the “welcome to…” even after clicking links about five times.  I don’t get it if you’re doing some sort of joke.

I never said it was a joke. The press release explains it all.  You have to click on the Oak Cliff section to get to the actual “store”, but here’s the image:

Ah….explained.  Well, if I knew what the Trinity was (I’m assuming this has nothing to do with religion), then it might makes sense.  I guess this is just a Texas thing.

The Trinity is a river that runs through North Texas.

I’ll admit that it’s not the kind of shirt that i’d wear, in fact i have a particular hatred for people who wear shirts with “Comedy” slogans on, but it is quite amusing.  suggest the people of Oak Cliff or where-ever go and get a sense-of-humour transplant. Rather than whining about high crime rates, and attempting to bad-mouth a local entrapeneaur, they should do something as a community to stop crime.

There’s a city here that has always had a lot of retailers, and the like, but I still wouldn’t go there alone or after dark.
