At last, an intelligent TV comedy!

I was steered to a BBC comedy called “QI” (for Quite Interesting).  Hosted by Stephen Fry, it is very hard to describe in a few words, but it is fast-paced, literate, funny, and could never be shown on network TV in North America.

It’s structured somewhat like a quiz show, with Fry acting as the quizmaster.  The contestants are British stand-up comics, literati, and general celebrity types.  Fry asks a question (from science, literature, history, etc.) and the contestants get points for giving interesting answers, right or wrong.  They are heavily penalized for giving boring or expected answers.

I found it on YoTube, and it’s given me hours of laughter.

I tried it.  Succeeded.  Not terribly impressed with the results so far.

Yeah, QI has been on for a few years now. Very amusing. Fry is gloriously funny, while at the same time speaking in that silken accent that us Americans swoon over.

I’m not a fan. Stephen Fry is supposedly a brilliant mind, reduced to presenting a quiz show with sub-B grade “celebs”.

I enjoy the show.  There have been a few occasions where they’ve referred to hoax-related stuff that’s been recorded round here, so it’s always nice to be one up on the celebs, as such.

From what i understand, he’s doing it *for fun*, in between more dignified work.

Mind you, Fry started his career as half of the comedy duo Fry and Laurie, with Hugh Laurie, better known by the American public as ‘House, md’.

Yes, he too is British.

They also appeared on Black Adder (well, mostly Laurie), and a few other shows of the time.

Stephen Fry has an impressive intellect, although, according to Mark Carwardine in the book Last Chance To See, he insists he merely has a very good memory. Either way, Stephen Fry is rarely ‘snobbish’, although he has his moments. I find QI an oasis of entertainment, both funny and thought provoking, in a largely desolate TV schedule.😊
