Four thick ledgers compiled by Special Branch officers have been kept under lock and key since the Whitechapel murders in 1888.

Trevor Marriott, a Ripper investigator and former murder squad detective, has spent three years attempting to obtain uncensored versions of the documents.

But he has been repeatedly refused because the ledgers contain the identities of police informants

I think it’s sort of the principle of the thing:  “If you are an informant for us, we’ll never release your name to the public.”  Also, I suppose it is possible that they’re not wanting to expose the living descendants of the people involved in the investigation to whatever crazy people might start hounding them over whatever nutty theories.
