So, I just came across this article, and all I can think is “Really?!”  Ugh.  What is wrong with the writers in Hollywood that they can’t come up with new ideas and write new movies, rather than remake really good ones that don’t need it?

(And yes, there are some new ones coming out that look pretty good {Thor, for example}, but it seems like entirely too many classic movies are being redone, which strikes me as somewhat lazy.)

Yep. Looks awful from the trailer. But, hey. It’s in 3D!

I don’t think I would class the original as really good!

Hollywood is constantly recycling ideas, mostly for the bad, but occaisionally a remake is better than the original, but usually only when the original is obscure or old.

My bigger issue is with theatre and orchestral music. So unoriginal that they’ve been perfoming the same plays and the same concerts for hundreds of years. I feel that it stifles modern creativity in those fields. Why take a risk on a modern play, when you can just do Shakespeare, again and again and again, ad nauseum, ad infinitum.

Okay.  At first I was rather miffed that the fine writers in Hollywood were doing yet another reboot of a succesful, well-made film.  If that were the case, not only wouldn’t I watch it, I would lose what little bit of liking I had for their product. (I rarely, if ever, go to a film as it is…)  After all, “If it ain’t broke, DON’T FIX IT!!” 😠

Then I went and watched one of the trailers for the film. (#2, found on IMDB, to be exact.)  And other than a very few references to the original, and the name (of course), there is little resemblance to the first Conan film.  Actually, I am a little ?surprised? that they didn’t just come up with a NEW barbarian’s name to name the film after. (And start a brand new line of merchandising along with it!)  After all, using the ‘conan’ franchise name means they must pay royalties to the entity holding the marketing rights to that name.  If they had started a new one (as they tried to do with “Kull”) the studio would be free to roll in ALL of the profits. 😉

So, in my mind at least, it isn’t Conan.  It is more like “Paznir- the Primordial” or some-such. :cheese:

The reason is that Conan is a well known name and will pull in the audience because of it

You could make the same movie and call it Fred the barbarian and you wouldn’t get half as
many people watching it because it would have nothing to do with Conan

Lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist
In Western Australi

Little Accipiter loved that girl enough
He told her jokes and crazy facts
And other forum stuff

Smerk the cutest dragon:
Traveled cross the sea,
To hunt her prey in foriegn lands,
And snuggle with Acci!

Smerk the cutest dragon
Is getting married now they say
Though little Accipiter
Has yet to name the day.

Heh. . .I’ve just recently been reading through the original stories.  They’re a tad better than the movies. . .
