Looks like a lot of people agree!

<a href=“http://www.switched.com/2011/02/16/detroit-robocop-statue-group-raises-50000/”>Source</a>

Barely a week after Detroit’s mayor tweeted that a RoboCop statue wouldn’t be erected in the city, the Detroit Free-Press is reporting that a group of artists and fans who supported the idea have raised more than $50,000 toward its construction. The group will continue to solicit donations on its Kickstarter page until March 29th. After that, it will determine how much to spend and hire sculptors to build the RoboCop statue. Despite Mayor Dave Bing initially rejecting the idea, the Free-Press claims the Mayor’s office is now working with the group to find a public spot for the statue. If not, the statue will likely end up at an outdoor art space called the Imagination Station.

The saddest part is all that futuristic cityscape was actually Dallas, not Detroit.

And people up here have started to toss around the idea for a Wolverine statue.  Not quite sure where it might be placed though.  The NWT is a fair bit out of the way for tourism.

Current reports indicate it’s probably going to be built.

And in my email box was update #3:

Robocop Statue Production Update! By Imagination Station Detroit
A lot has happened over the past week - lots of questions coming in, including how the statue is going to look and how it’s going to be produced. We’re extremely excited to announce that Fred Barton Productions (http://www.the-robotman.com/) has stepped-up with an offer to donate the use of the very same materials they are using to create their amazing 1:1 Robocop statue which is now available for sale. Ooh. Nice.

You know, they could probably just cast the bust in bronze and be done with it…

Heh.. of course, then it might look like this statue from Portland:

Google Maps

You really can’t tell from the picture, sadly, but that’s a nice bust, with a plaque underneath it, telling you who it is, and what their accomplishments were…

... except the head is a bizarre alien one, and the plaque is indecipherable alienese.

I don’t know what it’s actually called - I refer to it as the ‘Bust of the Alien Warlord’, as it looks like the sort of thing an alien general would have.

Update #4 was in my mailbox today:

RoboCop Peter Weller Speaks To Detroit (Video!), All Is Well, Movie Screening In Detroit TONIGHT
By Imagination Station Detroit
RoboBackers,

Something pretty amazing happened today. Peter Weller, who played RoboCop in parts 1 & 2, released a video on Funny Or Die saying hello to the people of Detroit, having some fun with the statue (which he loves), and letting the world know that RoboCop still fights for Detroit*: http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/521706ecf7/robocop-speaks-to-detroit

On the statue production side of things, all is well in the cosmos. Some of this is nitty gritty work as we confirm moulds and materials and the artists and craftsmen needed to accomplish the statue. Look out for more specific updates soon.

If you’re around Detroit tonight, the Burton Theatre is showing a double feature of RoboCop 1 & 2 starting at 8 PM: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=199715650054825 . Tickets are $5 and all the proceeds are going to the Detroit charity http://www.alternativesforgirls.org .

Feel great, everybody. Thanks for all your support and keep it up!

http://detroitneedsrobocop.com

Kind of short notice on the movie screenings though… mail was received at 5:09 p.m.

Update #5

RoboUpdate! Time’s Winding Down… “Your Friends Have 8 Days To Comply.”
By Imagination Station Detroit
RoboBackers! It’s hard to believe, but we’re coming up on just one week left of funding, and then the real fun begins. Here’s a quick update with more to follow in the remaining days, and of course beyond.

First, you should know that the peeps working on the production of the statue have been rocking it for you. We’re collaborating with some truly talented and expert people to finalize every step of the process and the ultimate location in Detroit. It’s amazing how quickly and organically and excellently this is all snapping together. The world doesn’t always move at internet speeds, but sometimes, on special occasions like this, it comes darn close!

Second, now is the time to tell your friends and networks that if they want to be in the credits of this epic creation they need to back the project through Kickstarter by March 26th. We’ve got the start of a revamped project site cooking at http://detroitneedsrobocop.com that will clearly credit everyone who contributes. Remember, friends don’t let friends miss out on being able to list “helped crowd-create a statue of RoboCop in Detroit” on their r

Update #7

YOU ROBODID IT!!!!!!!!!!!! By Imagination Station Detroit

Well, here we go! One crowd funded RoboCop statue in Detroit coming right up. RoboThank you so, so RoboMuch to everyone who backed the project, spread word, suggested ideas, and helped out, and to everyone who will continue to do so as production moves forward. We’re all on a 21st century adventure here, and you can follow the process as it unfolds at http://detroitneedsrobocop.com.

This is just the beginning, not only of the physical creation and installation of the statue, but of a wider crowdfunded revolution we’re all participating in, where things like this can actually happen. We’re proud to be a part of it with you, proud to be representing Detroit, and proud to roll into the future RoboStarter style.

In very new news, it looks like the statue is going to be installed on Wayne State University
