[Bigfoot is] a working-class male reaction against feminism and civil rights, a nostalgic return to a lost wilderness, a classic horror movie return-of-the-repressed with…hippie trappings.

Bigfoot: Life and Times of a Legend author, Joshua Blu Buhs’ take on Bigfoot according to Geoff Pevere in his article Where Did Bigfoot Go

The civil rights part I’m not sure of but, otherwise, I agree with the assessment. There are, or there used to be, guys in the field that fit this profile.

Of course, tales of Bigfoot or similar things predate the surge in feminism and civil rights in this country, and are also common in other cultures where feminism and civil rights are notably absent. . .

I just thought that Bigfoot was a mysterious lumbering ape/bear-humanoid that no one can get a clear picture of for some reason.

Hmmmm. . .now that you’ve put it that way, it does remind me of some feminists I’ve known. . .

Of course, tales of Bigfoot or similar things predate the surge in feminism and civil rights in this country, and are also common in other cultures where feminism and civil rights are notably absent. . .

But don’t surges in Bigfoot coincide with surges in feminism and civil rights?

When Rene Dahinden’s wife asserted herself and gave him an ultimatum—It’s me or Bigfoot—he said auf wiedersehen!

“One day Wanja just told me I was going to have to stop this Sasquatch thing or else,” recalls Dahinden. “I answered that if it came to choosing between her and the Sasquatch, then she was the one who would have to go. So we split up. Of course I miss her and our two sons, but I couldn’t knuckle under to an ultimatum like that. If you’re not doing what you like to do, you’re a prostitute, not a man, and your kids will realize it.” James Halpin, The Sasquatch. http://home.clara.net/rfthomas/papers/halpin.html

Around 1966 when Roger Patterson made sketches like this in his book and then filmed a female in 1967. I think it is based on William Roe’s sighting in 1957 in B.C.

Well, it doesn’t have an outtie, so we must assume it has an innie.

I read excerpts of Buhs book on Google Books and he says all the Bigfoot hunters are losers.

Buhs wrong on that score. Not everyone is in it for the same reason. I know one who worked on Wall Street and gave it up to live out west and picked up the pursuit.

“By imagining themselves in the body [costume] of Sasquatch, white working class men could imagine themselves as black, as women…. QUOTE Joshua Blu Buhs*

http://books.google.ca/books?id=RI4SlHwH7h0C&dq=blu+buhs+bigfoot&printsec=frontcover&source=bl&ots=d2dw0hZGYJ&sig=agRkwoAyKLaNesIS9QLe9yaeywc&hl=en&ei;=-2WySo1ngdCUB9PrxYcP&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1#v=onepage&q=&f=false

I think Joshua is a little off on his assessment. I think Paddy was made a female because he couldn’t find an 8 footer to fit the costume.
