So do all those students who spent years in class learning how to spell now get refunds?
I suppose that word order isn't too important as long as they were words you were very familiar with, and that you had lots of other words in the same sentence so you could get some of the meaning through context. And I now have a large spider crawling up my leg, so please excuse me while I absent myself abruptly from the computer. |

Although it's true that letter order isn't absolute to our understanding a word because of the amazing deciphering abilities of our brains, letter order is important in portraying an image of yourself. Do you care enough to use your language properly? Are you somewhat educated or just skipping by on what's "understandable?" Do you care any at all about the image you portray of yourself? Or are you just lazy? The occasional typo is acceptable... but to make a way of life of it? And then to tell us that just because the brain CAN decipher it, that we should, and that we should accept your drivel the way it is? Excuses, excuses...

As far as a I remember it, the article on Snopes pointed out that while it seems to be true that we can understand the writing with no problems, that fact has never been the result of any research; as evidenced by the lack of any details about which English university, and so on.
I personally would also question the conclusions of the argument. If the explanation given was true, and we ignored the individual letters and only read the whole word, we shouldn't notice that there is anything wrong with the spelling. It seems to me that it's more to do with the large amount of redundancy in the English language, which allows us to easily guess which word was meant when we come across something which has been misspelled. |
