If you listen real closely to the Laugh Track of several old re-run 60's TV comedies, you can hear an Audio Marker as "the crowd" laughs, where you will hear a director call out "CUT". It's a classic Laugh Track Sound Byte, and, being vision impaired, I can recognize that sound marker like the voice of an old friend. Try it: watch an episode of "Bewitched" or "Beverly Hillbillies"... At the end of a spurt of laughs, you may faintly hear the director call out "Cut". This is an audio marker, not a call from the director on the set. You may hear the CUT audio marker and the scene continues. I liken it to "cigarette burns" in the upper right hand of old pre-digital films. That was a marker to show the projectionist when the next reel was upcoming (first burn), and when to switch over (second burn). Both of these miniscule bits of trivia are true. Or am I full of it. You tell me.

I received several e-mails in response to this thread. One came from a man calling himself Elmo Lincoln, who claims that after a brief film career, he switched to the tech end of talkies, and became a sound man. Elmo identified the audio marking tool I described above as: "Laugh Loop Lineation", or "Nut Cut", to use the slang term. He also claimed to have dated the daughter of the supposed inventor of this process, Dr. Phillip De Yuchs. Elmo neglected to mention the daughter's name. |

an interested party just confirms that Elmo Lincoln was indeed a film actor, and even portrayed Tarzan for the first time on film, a silent, dated somewhere around 1915. doing the math, that would make my Elmo Lincoln about 100 years old. It's hard to tell froom an e-mail, so I guess it's possible. I also did a Goofball search on Dr. Philip De Yuchs. I was unable to ascertain as to whether or not he was indeed the inventor of the Laugh Loop Lineation process, but there is solid anecdotal hearsay evidence that suggests he did create the "Ho Ho Ho" portion of the Green Giant vegatables jingle. This effect was accomplished by using a "Ho Ho Hole", a cylindrical microphonic piezoelectric resonator, which gives you three Ho's for the price of one. A real cost saver for the Big Green Guy. |

If the laugh loop interests you...then the "scream" might too. I think it's called something like Alligator man scream, b/c there was a particular scream in a movie called Alligator Man...or something like that. Then later, a young man who watched a lot of movies kept hearing this same scream in other films. Later, he became some sort of sound guy & found the old scream & used it in films he was working on. Other sound people thought this was neat...so they used it also.

Ah, yes... I know that scream well. It was piercingly emitted by Beverly Garland, who later gained fame as Steve's second wife on the TV show "My Three Sons". True |

I kinda wondered about that myself. A 100-year old year old guy might not have a good grasp on reality, so maybe he really thinks he is Elmo Lincoln. I tracked the e-mail and the account is registered to an "Ernest Shackleton". Exactly what his relationship to Elmo Lincoln, if any, might be, one can only guess. |

Yeah, I found that strange, too. It seems that Ernest Shackleton led a crew of 22 men through 18 months of hellish survival on and near Antarctica. He and his men reportedly survived on plankton and seal meat, using the seal blubber as fuel. They spent nearly 6 months on a moving ice floe before taking to small boats. After the incident, Shackleton reportedly died in service in World War One, curiously just at about the time that Elmo Lincoln's film career began to grow. That would still make him 100 years plus, so he can call himself whatever he wants as far as I'm concerned. Besides, he never did actually claim to be the inventor of the Laugh Loop Lineation. I give him credit for the who;e Anarctica thing, though. That's a cool thing for an old guy. |

...There's a movie about it. Shakleton, it has Kenneth Branagh as Shakleton. I guess there's a couple of movies about it...but that's the one that you might actually find in a video store. |

After some intensive research, I've been able to determine that Beverly Garland was indeed Dr. Philip De Yuchs' aforementioned daughter, whom Elmo/Enrnest wooed in an apparent attempt to gain access to the Laugh Loop Lineation process. Oddly enough, it appears that it may have been Elmo/Ernest's Antarctic experience that led to De Yuchs' Ho Ho Hole device, based on the shape of a narwhal tusk. Who knew. |
