Agnes Scott College Walkout    (April Fool's Day - 1909)

All the students at Agnes Scott women's college in Georgia departed from the campus and spent the day in Atlanta (while wearing their mortar boards) shopping and going to movies. They left a note for their teachers in the empty classrooms: "April 1: is this your birthday?"

Atlanta, Ga., April 2. — The 300 girls who attend Agnes Scott college, in a suburb, deserted yesterday and spent the time in Atlanta patronizing the ice cream places and the moving picture shows. When members of the faculty entered the classrooms they saw this sign: "April 1: is this your birthday?"

The girls left the dormitories before sunrise. Some of the faculty didn't like the joke, and there was talk of disciplining the students.

Wearing their mortar boards, the girls caused a stir on Atlanta's streets. As early as 1 o'clock teachers were trying to round them up, but the last one was not corraled until night.
